        2. Abolitionists like Garrison and Frederick Douglass often pointed to the fact that the democratic US lagged behind its monarchical “mother country” in emancipating slaves.

      3. As I show in my first book, abolitionists also credited US democracy for a great deal, which only highlighted its hypocrisy on slavery; they were patriots who believed that shame for country and love of country were compatible.

    4. So when someone like @ewarren calls slavery a “stain” on the country, she is actually closer to the abolitionists’ view than someone who thinks those abolitionists and their country deserve more praise.
