          1. Terribly upset by this. It feels so unreal since I'm halfway through his latest book & was reading about his journeys through TX this morning. Tony was one of the nicest writers I've ever met. One of his last kindnesses to me, but not his first, was reading galleys of my book. + @JaneMayerNYer/1133382752781389825

I first met him at a conference on John Brown while he was working on his excellent Harpers Ferry book, & his passion for history & people was as infectious in person as you might imagine it to be from his books. +

He later came to Houston to talk about the Brown book and was nice enough to meet with my class at Rice and talk to students about Confederates in the Attic, a book that is still one of my favorites to teach. +

When he returned to Houston while working on Spying on the South, I enjoyed taking him to Hugo's where we shared the "insect tacos" (chapulines) he mentions having here. +

Saw him again this year at OAH but my enduring memory of him will be from that dinner, his wry humor on full display and his steno reporter's notebook always at hand. Rest easy, Tony, and deepest condolences to @GeraldineBrooks and all who loved him. This is so hard to believe.
